Sakal began its publication in Pune on January 1, 1932 at the time of the Indian freedom struggle. In its first editorial its founder, Dr. N. B. Parulekar said "A newspaper is a medium of public education and of social change". Sakal brought in many changes to the ideas of news at the time. It was the first Marathi daily to give prominence to national and foreign news along with local and regional events. Anything concerning the common man was considered newsworthy for Sakal . Reports on the rainy season, crops, plant and animal diseases, weather conditions, rural festivals, sports like wrestling found regular place in Sakal.
